Q: This is going to be a question you’re used to, so forgive me for asking, but…what’s with the mask, CAS?

CAS: I’m a teaching assistant at a nursery so I really want to try my best to avoid confusing the kids. They’re so young and impressionable.

Q: Where have you been? Five years had past prior to you releasing T.R.O.N last year – would you care to elaborate on your disappearance?

CAS: Nope.

Q: When you left the stage at Fabric earlier this year, the crowd were uncontrollable. How was that performance for you and can we expect to see you on stage again any time soon?

CAS: It was interesting, not something I’m very familiar with. Might be back soon, only time will tell.

Q: Although you’re most often affiliated with grime — due to your history within the scene — your music has a number of other influences; how would you define your sound?

CAS: Not belonging to any genre. Just drug-fuelled, cold harsh reality.

Q: Most artists seem to be in a constant struggle to source beats which allow them to fully express themselves. You appear to be one of the very few artists to successfully strike the balance between your lyricism and production on every occasion. How do you source your beats and how important is it to be selective with producers?

CAS: Cheers mate. I basically just jump on whatever I like, I would never limit myself to working with just one style of music. You’ll hear some of the weird sh*t I’ve jumped on pretty soon.

Q: Who does CAS listen to?

CAS: No one. I hate music.

In terms of visuals, it seems no one in Grime has came close to achieving what you have with the likes of Leon Best, Drugs Don’t Work, Yellow/Red and most recently, Walkin’. You’ve really set the bar above and beyond what’s been seen before – how important to you is the visual element of your art?

CAS: As important as the music. I would consider myself as much a director as an artist.

Q: The trailer was released for your mixtape, Commercial, over a year ago – what’s the current status with that?

CAS: F**k Commercial. It’s kinda out already anyway.

Q: Moving forward, you’re releasing new track, Charlotte, on June 23rd — what can we expect from that?

CAS: An experience like nothing you’ve seen before.

Q: Can we be dead (no pun intended) serious for a minute? The Dead Chicks; who’s your favourite really, though? [Laughs]

CAS: My favourite one I keep with me at home. She’s not dead though. Not yet anyway.

Q: Lastly, the infamous red Vans…you’re always wearing the same pair! [Laughs] Can you not get to a Footlocker in the underworld?

CAS: Nah, we have an Office down there but it’s always packed. I will get some soon once you slags start paying me more.

Q: Any last words?

CAS: Yeah, f**k you Ash. Na I’m joking, I love you really mate.

Kiss The Fire which is described as neither an EP nor a mixtape, shows L Marshall’s true self as an artist as he gives this project away to his fans as a gift. It demonstrates his ability to write captivating songs most specifically I.L.Y, Live All The Way and Fire.   You can understand why this is more a project as it allows L Marshall to experiment with different sounds. The track Kiss The Fire has a strong dup step sound and Gas Man has an edgy rock vibe to it while the rest of the project as a collective is almost split in two, with the first half having more rap leading to more singing and softer beats towards the end of the project. Focus brings a soulful and orchestral feel to the project making it one of the standout tracks on the project as L balances rapping and singing on the track exquisitely. Kiss The Fire shows off L Marshall’s skills as the versatile artist he is with this exciting project.

Pennies embodies all that is current in 2013 Hip Hop music whilst effortlessly floating in its own stratosphere. Nothing is diluted, and no rules were followed in its inception.Pennies is accompanied by a super slick video directed by Hopwood & Kirby and shot almost completely in reverse echoing the diversity and grit of this project.
With support from some of the scenes hardest hitters in place including repeat Radio 1 airtime courtesy of DJ Nihal, the word is: its about to be snow-time.

Gunplay – Acquitted

Prior to the release of his debut studio album Living Legend which is set to drop later this year on Def Jam, MMG representative Gunplay celebrated a headlining show at the legendary NYC venue SOBs last week by unleashing his latest mixtape release. The ten track project, which is minimal on the features, is a great addition to the Miami rapper’s discography as well as great introduction for new listeners.

Emilio Rojas – No Shame, No Regrets

Having waited a year and a half since the release of his previous project Breaking Point and after a number of delays, Rochester, N.Y. native Emilio Rojas drops his latest effort No Shame, No Regrets. The project showcases Emilio’s ability to balance commercially suited beats with clear delivery as he talks on his personal experiences and emotions, resulting in output to please most fans of hip-hop music. Azizi Gibson – Ghost In The Shell

After hitting the scene with Flying Lotus produced singles Sweetspace and Emperors New Groove, the Brainfeeder-signed rapper drops his new full-length mixtape produced mostly by Jonathan Lowell and MiLLz. The project sets him up for an second half of the year, which will also see him releasing a collaborative project with label-mate Jeremiah Jae.

Tre Mission – Malmaison

Toronto Grime MC Tre Mission finally let loose of his debut album last week and all free of charge. The project is very experimental in it’s production, and while it doesn’t strictly stick to the 140bpm instrumentals we might expect, is definitely rooted in our homegrown sound whilst tying in influences from T.Dot’s own flourshing music scene.

Problem – The Separation

Compton representative Problem comes off the back of his critically acclaimed collaborative project with IamSu! with his latest Gangsta Grillz tape presented by DJ Drama. The tape sees him accompanied by an even more impressive list of guests than previous projects with the likes of Glasses Malone, Wale, Wiz Khalifa, T.I., Snoop Dogg, Bad Lucc, Game, Chris Brown, Tank, Tyga and IamSu! all showing up to drop a verse. The soulful Kanye West that everyone is used to wasn’t the one that was present on this album. All the beats on the album featured production from people such as Daft Punk, Hudson Mohawke, No I.D. & more. Most of which were very dark, house/trap sounding beats. However, there were a lot of sounds on this album that I’ve never really heard before. As far as lyrics go, the lyrics were very anti-establishment & angry. You can tell that he wants to get some things off his chest. He didn’t feature a lot of other artists on the album either. Chief Keef, King Louie, & Charlie Wilson all make brief appearances but 90% of the album is all Kanye.
Personally, I think people will dislike the album at first listen because everyone is expecting that “old Kanye.” However, this album is truly amazing. I think what people have to keep in mind is that Kanye is a true artist with his music and he is always creating new material. You’re never going to get the same album twice from Ye. I believe he is paving a new path for artists to venture to with this Yeezus album. He’s never been afraid to push the boundaries of hip hop or music and he’s always been someone who influenced a lot on the game. Right now, EDM and Trap Music are a upcoming styles of music that haven’t really touched too much into hip hop but Kanye has taken the new popular style (EDM/Trap) and combined that with hip hop/rap to create his newest project. I also believe that with this album dropping, it will influence other artists to venture down the path of trap beats and house beats. I think it’s a great album and it’s definitely worth buying on June 18th when it drops. #YEEZUS
