Devlin – Director’s Cut

The UK heavyweight made his return last Monday, dropping a free five track EP to get us warmed up for his upcoming album, A Moving Picture, which is set for release in October. Following up from his break through single London City the standout cut of this tape is undoubtedly it’s sequel, which looks at how the Dagenham based MC owes his success to the city and sees him in a very different place to the original. Another highlight is Scary Movie which sees Devlin joined by Ghetts and Rawz Artilla going in over a horror themed Grime instrumental complete with some classic horror movie sound-bytes. This project definitely goes for quality over quantity and, despite it’s short length, has us confident that we will have this on constant replay until October.

DMX – The Weigh In

In preparation for DMX’s big comeback album, Undisputed, the Ruff Ryder unleashes a new EP which sees him taking on some existing instrumentals, as well as dropping original new cuts. Unfortunately one of the projects main selling points (or giving away points), it’s Dr. Dre produced cut, is only a recycled instrumental from Snoop Dogg’s Boss’ Life, however Snoop has recorded new vocals giving it some legitimacy (we’d have loved to hear some new Dre on there though). Despite this, it’s great to hear some new output from X, and if this is the warm-up the album should be very promising when it drops on June 26th.

SKYWLKR – Impressions

Last week’s ‘Ones To Watch’; Detroit hip-hop producer SKYWLKR dropped a new compilation of his instrumentals last week entitled, Impressions, which features some of his most popular tracks, from Danny Brown’s Blunt After Blunt, Outerspace, Lie4 and Bruiser Brigade to Children Of The Night’s ILYAS, Boldy James’ White Girls and Main Attrakionz’ Chandelier. Listening to the tracks minus their vocals and back-to-back here really highlight the genius behind the young producer’s work; SKYWLKR’s work is very ambitious and he is not one to shy away from trying something out of the ordinary. As we said in our ‘Ones To Watch’ article, we are expecting big things from Danny Brown’s Bruiser Brigade’s in-house producer and can’t wait until he drops his official instrumental debut later this year.

Black Noi$e x Danny Brown – XXX (The Remixes)

From one Danny Brown affiliated producer to another, SKYWLKR’s partner in crime, Black Noi$e, took four of the stand-out tracks from Danny Brown’s breakthrough album XXX and has given his own flavour to them; resulting in these laid back remixes, accompanied by instrumental versions courtesy of the Detroit producer who is also known for his work with Children Of The Night and Boldy James, as well as his Death Grips remix album created in collaboration with SKYWLKR. Whether you missed Danny’s XXX the first time around, or whether you’ve been bumping it on the regular (as we have) then this is going to be worth the download.

Also released this week was 9th Wonder protege Thee Tom Hardy, with his latest release Guerrila Broadcast; Minneapolis rapper, MaLLY’s latest project with producer The Sundance Kid, entitled The Last Great; NBA superstar LeBron James dropped a compilation mixtape to celebrate this season’s playoffs featuring new music from Fabolous, 2 Chainz, Freddie Gibbs and more; producer/rapper Oddisee released a quick four-track EP to warm fans up for his upcoming People Hear What They See which is set to drop next month; and Toronto’s Tory Lanez released his latest original project Sincerely Tory.

Not content with giving away hundreds of free music in the infamous Zip Files, Wiley once again steps out of the norm to provide his supporters with the best he has to offer, for absolutely FREE! The step freestyles (1-10) have been written, recorded and released in the space of a couple of weeks, with every new track featuring production from a different producer — from Darq E Freaker, to Zdot and Thomas Mellor – Wiley has laid out the whole spectrum of the scene.
