LIAM TOOTILL blogs on the recent Industry Takeover event

The main purpose of this post is to encourage people who have never been to an Industry Takeover event before to make sure you get down to the next one. The event, just gone (06.03.10), was well-supported in terms of acts, seminars, workshops, and fan support.

The day was hosted by Ralph Hardy and Shemika, who did a great job getting the timings and information concerning the different workshops and master-classes out to the crowds, encouraging everyone to go and get involved with the whole host of activities available to partake in; the day really was an inspirational catalyst for anyone looking to take that leap of faith into a career within the music industry.

The ‘editor’ and ‘head of marketing’ down at Urban Development, Fusion, responded to some questions I put to him…

1. Briefly talk about the team who put this event on, the efforts it takes, the manpower,  any shout outs you want to give, the aims of the event, what you hope people who attend get out of it?

Industry Takeover All-Day Seminar & Showcase is the culmination of a six month project led by Urban Development.

we wanted to build on our reputation for offering professional development, entertainment, education and networking opportunities to youth from across the capital.

Industry Takeover began its second phase in October 2009, with a series of monthly seminars, open mics and showcases at Stratford Circus. These sessions were managed by Urban Development’s youth team, the UD Creatives, and delivered seminars on publishing, image, networking, as well as top performances from Marvell, Cherri V, Lil Simz, Cynikal, Fuzzy Logic, The Stow, Tribal Man, Cynthia Erivo, Trozion, Clement Marfo and open mic champion RoxXxan.

The whole Industry Takeover project has been hard graft for the Urban Development staff and UD Creatives, but it’s paid off. Working in association with Rich Mix, Biggafish, Rising Tide, I Feel Experience, Streetlife FM and a host of top brands across the industry, we managed to create another great All-Dayer to round off the season.

2. Give your opinion briefly about the success of Saturday’s gig.

The turn out for this year’s All-Day Seminar & Showcase was amazing. The seminars were on point, performances from the likes of Ghetts, Griminal, Ny, UDVC and Master Shortie were strong and the vibe was positive. Judging by the stories I heard throughout the day, young people left with a better understanding of our industry and a desire to make a positive contribution to it.

3 Any words to encourage people who haven’t been to an industry takeover event before to get to the next one.

Industry Takeover is all about making sure that the next generation has the knowledge to shape their future and the creative industries. If you are young and passionate about urban music then you need to get down with the TAKEOVER…
