Despite the title being ‘Mixtape Monday’ this column deals with any free releases whether they be EP’s, Mixtapes or Albums, if it’s a free download then we’ll check it out! And that’s lucky as last week saw more original album and EP releases than mixtapes, with new original albums from OFWGKTA’s Domo Genesis and producer Alchemist, Sir Michael Rocks and a comeback album from Nina Sky, as well as EPs from Iggy Azalea, Tabi Bonney and G.o.D Jewels…
Iggy Azalea – Glory EP
T.I.’s pick in the new craze for having a buzz worthy female representative in your crew, drops her latest EP Glory which sees the Australian rapper release six new tracks featuring label mate B.o.B, Pusha T and of course TIP himself.
Nina Sky – Nicole & Natalie
Eight years after releasing their previous album, their self-titled debut which featured undoubtably their most popular single to date Move Ya Body, the singing twins have taken their music in a new direction with their largely house influenced new free download album, which is mostly produced by Brooklyn based Slimmy Neutron, alongside contributions from production from Salaam Remi, Brenmar and Beau Vallis. Whether you liked their music the first time around or not, it’s definitely worth revisiting what they have to offer in 2012.
Gianni Lee x Mike Blud – God Forgives, I Don’t: The Samples
With Rick Ross’ latest highly anticipated album God Forgives, I Don’t having dropped last week, DJs Gianni Lee and Mike Blud got together to release a Mixtape comprising the original tracks that formed the Bawse’s new LP. If you’re interested in sampling, production and soul music and want to get down to the roots of God Forgives, I Don’t then this one is for you.
Domo Genesis x Alchemist – No Idols
Odd Future’s Domo Genesis teams up with super-producer Alchemist (fresh off his Russian Roulette LP release) for his original free album release which includes 11 solid hip hop tracks including the amazing lead single Elimination Chamber which enlists the talents of Earl Sweatshirt, Vince Staples and Action Bronson to form one of the most exciting hip-hop collaborations of the year so far. Aside from the aforementioned, Earl and Action Bronson also contribute multiple verses to the project and Tyler The Creator, Smoke DZA, Prodigy, SpaceGhostPurrp and Freddie Gibbs are all on board with contributions. It’s always great to hear Domo Genesis constantly improving as a rapper, and this project encompasses everything we like about Alchemist and the artists he works with (although an Evidence appearance wouldn’t have gone amiss).
Sir Michael Rocks – Lap Of Lux
It’s getting to the point where a week doesn’t go by without a release from a member of Curren$y’s Jet Life crew, and this week’s free release comes in the form of the latest solo album from one half of The Cool Kids Sir Michael Rocks. With features from the likes of Mac Miller, Rockie Fresh, Casey Veggies and more, as well as production from Cardo, Hit Boy, Flosstradamus and Chuck Inglish, this could well be his strongest effort to date.
Also out last week was Tabi Bonney’s latest Summer-vibes project with his Lovejoy Park EP; Chicago up-and-comer G.o.D Jewels released his latest EP The Looking Glass; and Toronto producer-rapper Rich Kidd released his latest mixtape showcasing some of his recent production work as well as some solo cuts…
