A$AP Rocky x Star Slinger 8th June 2012 @ Manchester HMV Ritz…
Manchester lived up to its reputation for rain, rain and more rain, but this did nothing to dampen the spirits of the fans who eagerly waited outside the venue to see A$AP Rocky and his crew do their thing.
Producer and DJ Star Slinger provided the support for the Harlem rapper with a hip-hop/dubstep infused set that also took in some of his own productions such as the track Dumbin’. As Star Slinger brought his set to a close the venue was awash with bodies buzzing for A$AP and his team to make their appearance.
Shortly after A$AP’s DJ took to the stage and began to put together his respective set-up ready for the show, suddenly, the lights go out, the sounds of the SpaceGhostPurrrp produced Pretty Flacko fill the room and A$AP Twelvy enters the stage to hype the crowd and get them chanting ‘A$AP’. Finally the man himself comes out draped in his signature camouflage hoody and the crowd goes absolutely wild. The pairing of Rocky and Twelvy boom out the lyrics to the track, yelling them almost, and the crowd do the same as they bounce along to the heavy rhythm.
Following this energetic start the crowd are given a chance to rest and recuperate as the Clams Casino produced Wassup gets played out with the stage drowned in purple lighting. A$AP Rocky encourages the fans to: ‘Sing along if you know the words y’all, hands in the air.’ It appears that they definitely do know the lyrics, as they are in good voice.
It is about this time during the show that a certain aroma fills the air and a performance of the laidback track Roll One Up commences and the crowd happily bop along to it. Next up is Bass, and this gets the crowd jumping around again as A$AP Rocky and Twelvy put all the effort they can muster into it. The amount of tracks performed that originated from the rapper’s 2011 Live.Love.A$AP mixtape is testament to the quality of it as a whole.
The crowd goes wild when Goldie, the first single off A$AP Rocky’s solo debut album, is dropped. The Hit-Boy produced track is a definite highlight of the show, and it foregrounds that the rapper is going from strength to strength.
The show itself is without its thrills and spills as A$AP Rocky jumps into the crowd at one point and the fans do their fair share of crowd surfing too [no Rolex stealing this time]. When the security try and eject said fans the rapper prevents it and gets them to come up on stage and join in with the antics.
Renditions of Kissin’ Pink, Trilla, Purple Swag all feature and then A$AP Rocky signs off with undoubtedly the biggest track off his mixtape, Peso. While the show has been relatively short everyone has definitely got their fare share of A$AP.
