Speech Debelle – Studio Backpack Rap

Speech Debelle is all set to release her second album, Freedom Of Speech, in February 2012. Here’s a little something to tide us over until that time…

Speech has described Studio Backpack Rap as “all about virtual instrumentation and an ode to Kwes the producer. For the writing stage of the album he would take out his laptop and midi-USB keyboard and that would be it. We’d start working and I couldn’t believe what we could do with so little equipment.”

Studio Backpack Rap is available for free download now, although it’s not the first track to appear from the forthcoming album. Speech leaked Blaze Up A Fire from Freedom Of Speech earlier in the year, when the London riots made the political subject matter topical.

It’s two years since Speech won a Mercury Music Prize in 2009 for her debut Speech Therapy. If this track’s anything to go by, Speech has altered her style. A collaboration with South London producer, Kwes, has contributed to a vibrant new sound. She’s on form lyrically too, laying down some innovative and witty rhymes.
