The excited crowd inside YOYO’s went from hyped to hush quicker than Usain Bolt on Thursday night as Delilah, aka Paloma Stoecker, took to the stage to perform an acoustic set ahead of the release of her new EP, Go.
Best known for lending her vocals to Chase and Status for club banger, Time, she pairs her gorgeous voice with honest lyrics and simple beats. Still just 19, she was one of the first to work with dub-step heavyweight Skream and recently featured on Wretch 32′s track Don’t Be Afraid.
DJ Greenslade played classic Hip Hop until Delilah went on stage just before 11. Dressed in black lace, purple shorts and dripping in gold, the girl has serious stage presence. Despite the microphone going quiet at the beginning, an acoustic version of Time left the crowded club awestruck.
Described as dub step soul, Delilah contrasts her fierce image with an on-stage vulnerability. Pretty ballads like Breathe alongside a brave cover of Santogold’s Creator made for an interesting set. She pulled out some serious swagger for her track Haters with feisty lyrics, which fans in the front row sang along to.
She finished her set with a pitch perfect copy of Minnie Riperton Inside My Love. Later on she was overheard worrying about a technical glitch but the open mouthed audience were proof enough that Delilah is one to watch.
Delilah’s EP, Go, is released on Atlantic on September 26th.
