Watch the Throne release angers independent record stores.

Jay-Z and Kanye West‘s forthcoming Watch the Throne collaboration album is one of the most hotly anticipated rap releases of all time. Yet despite this US independent record stores have sent an open letter to the pair. This is because the album is exclusively released on iTunes on August 8th and doesn’t arrive in shops until August 12th, as well as this the deluxe edition is going to be sold only in Best Buy stores for the first 10 days of release.

Part of the letter reads: “We believe this is a short-sighted strategy, and that your decisions will be doing great damage to over 1,700 independent record stores – stores that have supported you and your music for years.”

What do you make of this? Surely the album will sell massively regardless of who is selling it? And with the hotly anticipated deluxe edition independent record stores could boost their profits massively.
